Description
The “Algemeene Nederlandsche Railroute-Maatschappij (ANRM)” was a company that operated a horse tramway for passenger transport between The Hague and Delft from June 24, 1866, to December 1, 1874. The ANRM was established on March 30, 1865, and it was financed with French capital. Cornelis Soetens, a resident of The Hague, had been working for many years to obtain concessions to operate horse tramways. In 1864, he obtained a concession from the second Thorbecke cabinet, which was supportive of public transportation, for a rail route from Rotterdam via Overschie, Delft, and The Hague to Leiden, as well as from Haarlem to Amsterdam. He succeeded in finding French financiers for the route from The Hague to Delft. This is the only line from this concession that was established during Soetens' time; on the other routes, steam tramways or electric tramways were only built much later, and Overschie to Delft was never realized. On June 24, 1865, the line from The Hague to Delft was ceremoniously opened, and regular public service began the next day. It was the first interurban horse tramway and also the first interurban tramway in the Benelux. In the early 1870s, interest in this line declined, leading the French financiers to withdraw from the enterprise. On December 1, 1874, the operation was definitively stopped, and on July 2, 1875, the ANRM was declared bankrupt. The concession for the horse tramway was purchased from the estate by the Société Anonyme des Tramways de la Haye in 1876. They modified the line and reopened it on January 20, 1877. Today, this is the electric line 1 of the HTM.
