History of McDonald's
The first McDonald's restaurant was opened in 1940 in San Bernardino by the brothers Dick and Mac McDonald, sons of Scottish immigrants. In 1948, the brothers conceived the Speedee Service System, a hamburger assembly line without table service. The little hamburger man Speedie became their mascot. Ray Kroc, a milkshake machine salesman, came up with the idea of opening more establishments. In 1954, contracts were signed allowing Ray Kroc to apply this concept worldwide. This marks the beginning of the current McDonald's.
The first official McDonald's restaurant opened on April 15, 1955, in the American town of Des Plaines, Illinois. Shortly thereafter, in July, a second restaurant opened in Fresno, California. Two years later, in 1956, there were already 12 restaurants in operation.
The Happy Meal for children was developed in 1977 by Dick Brams. He tasked the advertising agency Bernstein with giving McDonald's the image of a family restaurant. Two years later, the first Happy Meal was sold for $1.00. This initial version of the Happy Meal came in the form of the Circus Wagon box, which included a cheeseburger or hamburger, along with fries, cookies, a beverage, and a piece of toy. The toy could be a McDoodler (activity book), a McWist wallet, or a McDonald's flat eraser.
The first McDonald's hamburger restaurant in the Netherlands opened its doors on August 21, 1971, on Vermiljoenweg in Zaandam. This restaurant in Zaandam was not only the first in the Netherlands but also the first in Europe. In addition to the well-known hamburgers, the menu featured a chicken super leg, applesauce, and even pea soup. Potatoes for the French fries were still hand-peeled. Furthermore, the McKroket was available here, which, like other products, gradually disappeared from the menu. The McKroket was out of sight for many years but made a national comeback in 1999. The Netherlands is the only country where this burger is available.
McDonald's is making significant progress, both literally and figuratively. The number of restaurants is on the rise. The Netherlands is fully prepared for it. The one hundredth restaurant is opened in Maastricht, and the two hundredth follows on February 2, 2002, in Barneveld. In America, it's quite common to order a meal from your car. This phenomenon is called Drive-Thru there. Naturally, McDonald's in the Netherlands couldn't lag behind. Huis ter Heide has this first, as we call it in the Netherlands, McDrive. On September 1, 1987, the first McDrive is opened here. The entire neighborhood was in panic and protested, resulting in traffic jams and parking problems.
To make the meal appealing to children, it is packaged in a colorful box with one or more toys included. For the first real Dutch Happy Meal in 1986, a plastic box in the shape of a UFO was used in four cheerful colors. Stickers were included for children to decorate the box themselves. At this moment, there are 219 restaurants in the Netherlands that are visited by about 3 million people each week. The Happy Meal and Happy Meal toys are still popular!
