The inception of the pocket watch traces back to 1510 when a German watchmaker named Peter Henlein crafted the first prototype. Leveraging advancements in mainspring technology, Peter achieved a smaller watch design previously unattainable. This initial model differed significantly from other timepieces due to its compactness, making it wearable. However, during this period, it was worn as a pendant on a chain around the neck rather than in a pocket. The initial models were somewhat unwieldy and boxy, not fitting the pocket's confines. The term "pocket watch" was not employed until the watch underwent redesign in the 17th century.

The name "pocket watch" was introduced by Charles II of England, who popularized waistcoats and initiated the practice of placing the watch within his pocket. Gradually, the pocket watch evolved into a symbol of status across Europe and North America. During this era, nearly every respected gentleman aspired to possess or own their personal pocket watch. In the 18th century, its popularity surged further as elaborate features, including intricate designs adorned with diamonds and jewels, were incorporated. This transformation elevated the pocket watch into a lavish and expensive luxury item exclusive to the elite.

With the advent of standardized watch components in the 1800s, the pocket watch became accessible to a broader audience. As one can imagine, its popularity endured for decades. However, the introduction of wristwatches during wartime marked the beginning of the pocket watch's decline in popularity.
